Childhood

A teenager, "Flying Sikh" Milkha Singh did not spend his time dreaming of an Olympic track medal -- he was too preoccupied with running for his life.

India's biggest sporting icon, who narrowly missed a medal in the 400 metres at the 1960 Rome Olympics, is now 74 and still shudders when he remembers what happened in his small northern village in what is now Pakistan.

It was only after going to the army and running a few races that his life as a runner began.

'Somehow the Flying Sikh has endured in people's memory'.
