Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman - The Underground Railroad

Underground railwayThe Underground Railroad was not a physical "train" but a series of houses and hiding places where slaves escaping from the south could find food and shelter for a time as they were escaping to the North. Harriet Tubman was a person that helped in the underground railroad to help others escape from slavery. She received the first woman's Nobel Peace Prize for her work. The goal of the underground railroad was to get out of the slavery states, and then to make their way to Canada - or the free states. Many believed that Canada was the best place closest to the U.S. She was also the first woman to run the underground railroad. Thanks to Harriet Tubman, more than three-hundred slaves were freed.

Harriet Tubman was just one person, but she made people feel that they could do anything if they put their mind to it.
