Harriet Tubman

 

Harriet Tubman was born as a slave in 1819 In Dorchester County, Maryland. Her ancestry was purely African. As a small child she was abused by the slave owner. After she later freed herself from slavery she helped with the underground railroad. She returned to Maryland to free her family. She then went on to escort people to freedom in the north. Many slaves called her Moses because she lead them to the north just as Moses led the Hebrews out of exile in Egypt.
