Nelson Mandela received the Sakharov prize for freedom in 1988. Three years after he got out of jail he received the Nobel peace prize in 1993. He also received the Bharat Ratana India's highest civilian award.
Mandela was the president from 1994-1999. He was the first black President of South Africa. He retired from that in June of 1999. After he was president he became even more involved in human rights. He received honors from Queen Elizabeth the second and from George W. Bush. He received the Order of St. John and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2001 he became a citizen of Canada and he was the first living foreign honorary citizen. In 2003 Mandela accused President Bush of being a racist. He said that he did not consult the secretary-general (who was a black man) about the war in Iraq. Mandela noticed that Bush had consulted all the other Secretary generals who were all white men.
