Mohandas K. Gandhi

Young gandhi at age 7Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. (Photo to the left is at age 7.) At the age of 18, on September 4, 1888, he went to the University Collage London to train as a barrister.

He was an important political leader of India and the struggle for independence from the British Empire.

He is called "Mahatma" (Big Soul). He believed in non-violence. He wanted for India to be free. He persuaded the Indian National Congress for a free India and he succeeded. Five months after India was free, Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu man who didn't like him. He died on January 30, 1948 in New Delhi at the age of 80.

Mahatma Gandhi is known as the Father of India.
