In the year of I858 Abraham Lincoln ran against Stephen A. Douglas for senator. Although he lost the election debating against Douglas gained him a reputation that gave him the Republican nomination for president in 1860.

When he was president he made the Republican Party into a strong organization. He rallied a lot of the Northern Democrats to the Union side. On the first of January 1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation. which said "that all persons held as slaves" within the confederate states "are, and henceforward shall be free."
