
Life and CareerIn 1947, he was appointed as the first National Professor by the new government of Independent India. He retired from the Indian Institute of science in 1948 .The Indian Institute of Science is one of the premier post-graduate institutions of research and higher learning located in Bangalore, India. A year later he established the Raman Research Institute in Bangalore, India serving as its director and remained active there until his death in 1970. He never lost his interest in acoustics and one of his significant discoveries was the mridangam and the tabla, these unlike other drums have harmonic overtones.
CV Raman is the uncle of Nobel Prize Physics winner Dr. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. India celebrates National Science Day on the 28th of February every year. On this day, in 1928, Dr. CV Raman discovered the Raman effect. CV Raman came from a very humble background and even with very cheap equipment, he managed to win the Nobel Prize.
