CV Raman

Awards

Raman won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the scattering of light and for the discovery of the Raman effect. Raman spectroscopy, based on his effect is named after him. He had equipment which hardly cost Rs.200 and meager facilities which he used to get the 1930 Physics Nobel Prize. An interesting saying goes that he was offered a toast during the Nobel function. Being a strict teetotaler he responded, "Sir! You have seen the Raman effect on alcohol! Please do not try to see the alcohol effect on Raman. The Raman Effect is important in understanding the molecular structure of chemical compounds. It was the first time that an Indian scholar who studied only in India received the Nobel Prize. He was knighted by the queen of England in 1929. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954,which is the highest civilian award in India.
